Move in day is notorious for being high stress and very chaotic – and its rapidly approaching for most people. While the process will be difficult and tedious no matter what, here are 10 tips on making it way easier and taking a bit of the load off!
1. Unpack anything that has unnecessary packaging. On move in day the trashcans will fill up pretty quickly with boxes and plastic so it’s best to leave that stuff behind or you will have to figure out somewhere else for it to go.
2. Bring basic cleaning supplies. Dorms can rack up a lot of dust and grime even when no one is using them, so cleaning supplies will come in handy during move in.
3. Clean the room BEFORE moving anything in. That way you don’t have to dust and wipe and vacuum around things. This will make the process a lot more enjoyable and easier.
4. Try putting anything you plan to hang in a closet, such as jackets and sweaters, into a plastic trash bag with the top of the hangers sticking out of the bag. This will save a lot of time and effort while moving in!
5. Pack a bag with everything you need for one night. That way you don’t have to blah blah
6. If you are bringing any storage containers, like plastic drawers and etc., store some of your stuff in them and while moving tape them shut. This way you’re keeping space available for other things you need to move while simultaneously keeping small things from rolling around. I suggest putting make up, hair and skin care items, and other small items in the storage containers
7. Bring snacks and drinks! Personally, I get terrifyingly hangry (hungry+angry) and a snack has saved me many times from turning into a move-in-day monster. Chances are, someone else in your move in crew (perhaps you yourself) will also need a quick bite to stay mellow. Not to mention that many dorms are notoriously hot, especially in the summer, so water is extra important.
8. Bring a fan! The heat from the summer plus your entire family crammed into one small dorm room means a lot of sweat and humidity. A fan will become a life saver in such situations and will continue to aid you throughout your time in the dorms.
9. Be on time (or, better yet early)! Move in day is already going to be very chaotic so don’t make anything more difficult than it needs to be by being late.
10. Prop your door open! This way you can meet new people and get a sense of who you will be living around for the next year while additionally increasing airflow in a room that definitely needs it.
Hopefully these tips help make your move-in day as easy and low stress as possible; I know they helped me a lot. Most of these tips can also be applied to moving anywhere so keep them in mind for all your relocation endeavors!
